One Minute Review of Suunto X9i GPS Watch
The Suunto X9i, new for Spring ’06, is a wrist-top GPS system designed for trekking and other outdoor activities. It has a full compliment of features and data, including lat/long, altitude, barometric pressure, waypoints, speed/distance, rate of ascent/descent, and both a digital compass and GPS heading logic. It is so packed with features that it may take a fair amount of study to master them all. It records your location every 10 seconds, plus allows you to mark specific waypoints (rivers, trails, rocks, peaks etc) for later review or to find your way back.
The X9i ships with a USB cable and Suunto’s Trek Manager software in the box. Up/downloading of everything is easy. Trek Manager does not include topo maps, but the files are compatible with National Geographic’s Topo! software which contains USGS quad maps, available for any state (sold separately). This allows you to overlay your adventure on the topographic map in full detail.
The X9i works on a rechargeable battery, good for about 10 hours of GPS operation on a charge. It can be recharged at a wall socket or with the USB connection. Indicative of Suunto’s intentions for this model: the box contains adapters to let you plug into any wall outlet in the world.
