Why train your core?
Because most athletes focus on their sport – swimming, biking, and/or running with maybe some weight training thrown in – they are missing the benefits that are obtained by a strong core. A strong core is essential to keeping your body stable during exercise.
Training the core of the body refers to exercising those slower and larger muscle groups of the lower back, hips and abdominals. This is mainly where the body's center of gravity is located and where movement begins. By strengthening your core, you will be able to run, cycle and swim with less effort, and be less susceptible to injury.
The DVD suggests exercises at a beginning, intermediate and advanced level so you can progress as your body gets stronger. EnduranceCORE also includes specific core training programs for triathletes, cyclists and runners. The stability ball segments provide you with core strengthening exercises that will challenge even the fastest triathlete. (Fortunately, the DVD provides exercises for all levels so you can start at your current level and progress from there.)
The EnduranceCORE DVD includes a segment on dynamic stretching. Performing these stretches before each workout will help you warm up and stay injury-free. Learning the self-myofascial release techniques with the foam roller can help aid your recovery after your exercise by working on your trigger points – without the expense of your favorite massage therapist. Eric Schmitz has over 17 years of coaching experience and is a USAT Level 1 certified triathlon coach, as well as a competitor himself.
The recommended equipment to use along with this DVD includes a stability ball, light to moderate weight dumbbells, a foam roller, and an exercise mat. With this small amount of equipment, the Endurance CORE DVD, and 30 minutes a day, you will be well on your way to a stronger core and a great season.
